WEEK SEVEN: ADULTS, TEENS & TWEENS
OCTOBER 28 - NOVEMBER 1
Recommended 4th Grade to Adults
Lamentations is a collection of Hebrew poems that focuses on the grief, pain, and suffering that came out of living in Jerusalem when it was besieged by the armies of Babylon and eventually captured, plundered, and destroyed.
Watch the video on Lamentations on this page.
What did you learn from watching that video?
An event which changed Jewish history forever is the Babylonian exile. The entire national structure of the kingdom, which was thought to be ordained by God himself, came crashing down. This event fulfilled centuries of prophetic warnings, as hundreds of years of tradition, culture, and history was destroyed in just one year. The people's hearts and spiritual state was broken.
READ & REFLECT
What parallels do you see between the siege and exile and life in today’s world?
As a result of these events, the Israel people lost their temple, and their spiritual connection to one another and to God was fractured. How can you relate to this experience with the events of 2020? What has your experience meant to you?
We are told the fall of Jerusalem happened because the people were being punished by God. What thoughts or questions arise for you as you consider those verses?
Consider Jesus’ cross and empty tomb as you lament this broken reality. How did Jesus enter into the sufferings of the world? How does Jesus’ resurrection change your perspective?
Lord Jesus Christ, by your patience in suffering you hallowed earthly pain and gave us the example of obedience to your Father’s will: Be near us in our time of weakness and pain; sustain us by your grace, that our strength and courage may not fail; heal us according to your will; and help us always to believe that what happens to us here is of little account if you hold us in eternal life, our Lord and our God. Amen.
