Christ Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa will present a choral evensong on Sunday, March 1, the first Sunday of Lent, at 6:00 p.m. as a special offering by the adult choir and the St. Cecilia Singers.
The evensong service takes as its theme the ancient Gregorian chant Ubi caritas et amor “Where Charity and Love are, God is there.”
The St. Cecilia Singers, students in grades 3-5, will open the evening with the introit “Ubi caritas” from the back of the nave.
The adult choir will sing a musical setting of Psalm 103 in an arrangement by K.J. Pye, and will sing “O gracious light” (Phos hilaron), arranged by David Hogan, a traditional evensong hymn dating back to the 3rd century
Featured in the service will be the evening canticles “Magnificat in B minor”(My soul doth magnify the Lord) and the “Nunc Dimittis in B minor” (Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace) by T. Tertius Noble.
Other pieces included in the program will be four different unaccompanied settings of the Gregorian chant—“Ubi Caritas” by Ola Gjeilo, “Where Charity and Love Prevail” by Normand Gouin,“Ubi caritas” by Maurice Durufle, and “Ubi caritas” by James Biery,
Congregational hymns are “Where Charity and Love Prevail” and “God Himself is with us.”
“Evensong is a musical setting of the service of evening prayer from the Book of Common Prayer, sometimes called vespers,” said music director Doff Procter, “and is traditionally sung at the setting of the sun.” The service is free and open to the public.
